So, what exactly is a felt cowboy hat? Felt is made from interlocking, short, single animal fibers, which are pressed together with hot water and steam. Though felt is just another ‘fabric’, it is stronger than other women fibers because unlike other fabrics construction, the felt fibers are individually interlocked with other fibers, in multiple directions.

Woven fibers are typically made of twisted fibers, made into threats first, then added to the overall fabric design construction. This is what allows you to tear some fabrics apart in a straight line. That is why felt is used in constructing hats because it is much more difficult to tear felt, and it is naturally water resistant and very light weight, as compared to other fabrics.

So how does one measure the quality of felt construction then? It is all in the X’s. The measurement of quality in a cowboy hat using felt is in the number of X’s. Traditionally, the number of X’s stood for the amount of beaver fur used in the construction of the felt hat. today.

That is not the case, but the use of felt and straw X’s still come into play as quality, more so than traditionally design, however, there is no industry standard. So be wary if some outfit is trying to sell you a higher prices cowboy hat just because it has a higher number of X’s. Unless the hat does have beaver fur woven into it, a 5X hat may actually be of lesser value than a 3X hat…just do your homework and ask questions.
